I performed this workout on Thursday instead of Friday because I am driving to Nashville, TN tonight after work to begin my epic trek to Indiana to visit Garrett for the first and only time this season.  Fortunately, I was still able to recruit some guys for company on this one: Matt, Brad, Caleb and David.    We all met at the Wilmore Welcome Center and jogged over to JCSU at 5:40am for some early repeats on the track. Since I had just completed a 3x2 mile workout only 2 days prior, I wasn't entirely sure if I could hit my target paces.  Fortunately, the company of the boys pulled me along to hit the goal for the most part.  In fact, this was the first track workout in a while where I really just ran, without looking at splits or anything.  I just cruised along, trusting in what my legs were doing.  After 8 laps, we took a 2 min break to grab some much needed water before beginning the second half of the quarters.  I don't think I've actually completed the full 16x400m workout in the last three times I've done this, so I was pleased that I powered through to actually complete the entire workout for once.  Another new goal for this season--complete all of my #1 and #2 most important workouts for that week, which Mark has conveniently prioritized for me.

3x2 Mile

Goal:
3x2 mile with 2:00 rest at 5:50-5:55 pace

Actual:
3.4 mile warmup
3x2 mile with 2:00 rest at 5:47 pace
11:36 (5:48, 5:48), 11:35 (5:47, 5:45), 11:36 (5:47, 5:48)
2 mile cool down

This was an early morning run at the Dilworth Speed Loop with Chad, Mike, Spada, Caleb and Danielle.  In the past, I've approached this workout with the goal to run faster than I ever have on this course.  However, now that I've received my new training plan from Coach Mark Hadley, I knew that this wasn't the goal.  My new focus is to make 5:50-6:05 pace feel as controlled, relaxed and easy as possible.  This means that I really won't be going "all out" in workouts so much any more as I prepare for Philly.

With this goal nestled into my mind, I set off behind the boys for the first interval.  I could tell that everyone else was trying not to just leave me in the dust in the first 800m, but they held back just enough.  Caleb was a trusty sidekick the entire way as we ran side-by-side for all intervals.  Just like clockwork, I ticked off 5:47s like it was no big deal.  I was surprised at how perfectly I could hit those splits and make it feel relatively easy.  For the third interval, I felt a little bit more fatigued, but I could account that to the humid weather that has finally made its way to North Carolina.

In the end, I definitely achieved the goals of this workout. I really do think that Mark would be proud of how I executed the workout strategy to perfection, even if the splits were a little faster than the original goal pace he had outlined. I'm looking forward to working on my pacing throughout the next six months.

The Home Stretch

Wow, I cannot believe it is almost here..... after many months of anticipation, the Miss Massachusetts pageant is right around the corner!

I've spent so much time reading up on my current events, mentally preparing myself to have the greatest week of my life, striving to eat healthfully, organizing appearances, practicing my dance, and dragging myself to the gym after long workdays that begin at 6am, that now I sit back and reflect on all my hard work.

As the "home stretch" approaches, I feel so incredibly blessed, calm, and happy. I've had such an amazing support system from my friends, my family 1,000 miles away, and the Miss Boston board has taken me under their wing to make me feel as prepared as possible. Not to mention, I get to hang out with 15 of the most AMAZING women I've ever met for 4 days! I feel so lucky to have met 15 new friends in Massachusetts and I'm about 110% confident we are going to have WAY too much fun this week :)

I am ecstatic to dance my heart out on the Hanover Theatre stage to "Monkey Back"- the song that took my senior dance team to State for our first time ever, and makes me SO happy!

I've spent a lot of time at the gym and along the harbor running, which is my favorite stress reliever for the most "nerve-wracking" part of the pageant: swimwear. I know that I don't have a perfect body, no 6-pack abs, but at the end of the day, I am SO proud that I have been able to live a healthy LIFESTYLE! I really believe that the "Lifestyle and Fitness" category isn't about how skinny you are..... its about the lifestyle you live and the confidence you portray because of it! And I am so happy to be going on-stage as myself, 100% happy with my body, without ever depriving myself. Of course, I had to replace my favorite cookies and pancakes with vegetables and nuts for a while, but I want women to know that starvation is NEVER the answer to "healthy" and that it is possible to lead a nutritious lifestyle if you're willing to put in the dedication. You ARE beautiful just the way you are, and I can promise that you will feel more confident as you continue to cleanse your body with healthy foods! Check out my other postings for ideas on how to get started!
Obviously, I am very excited to indulge in a juicy cheeseburger and gooey chocolate chip cookie after the conclusion of the pageant, and believe that meals like this (in moderation) are the key to happiness and sanity!

I am so excited to present my platform "Fit for Success" to the judges, and hope that they can see my passion for this subject. I try to make my platform a reality but striving to live healthfully every day, while encouraging others to do the same. Like I always say, I promise it is possible!!!

All in all, I am just so excited. I want to thank everyone for reading my blog (which has had over 3,200 views!!!!!!) and I look forward to blog some new workouts and recipes after the Miss Massachusetts pageant has concluded! And most of all, I can't wait to see which of my friends is headed to MISS AMERICA!!!

Now I need to calm down so I can go to bed before this busy week begins!
